Henderson
"The Gateway to the Atchafalaya"
Incorporated in 1971, Henderson, Louisiana, is a relatively young town that was established after the construction of levees in the 1930s forced the relocation of residents from the former Village of Atchafalaya. The town, first appearing on maps as "New Henderson Landing" in the 1940s, grew into a hub of Cajun culture, renowned for its cuisine, crawfish industry, and swamp tours. The completion of Interstate 10 in the 1970s further connected Henderson to the region, and today it serves as a gateway to the Atchafalaya Basin and the man-made Henderson Lake, which provides prime fishing and ecotourism opportunities. Residents, many of whom are descendants of Cajun settlers, have worked to preserve their unique cultural identity, reflected in the town's lively music, food, and strong local community.
