The next step in Arnaudville’s Renaissance

ARNAUDVILLE, LA—Arts community establishes school in Arnaudville

Now the questions is not how much fun can you have in Arnaudville, but “How much can you learn in Arnaudville?”

In the years since the impact of Katrina and Rita, George Marks has established a gallery combining fine arts and exemplary crafts in Arnaudville. Known as the ATown Market,@ it has become the focus of a small town renaissance. Now, there is NuNu’s Nightlite and Café, Turtle Cove Studio, Cypress City Antiques, Cajun Fiddle and Lori Henderson Studio and Un Petit Cadeau – A Little Gift, to name some.  And, yes, George is credited as being the heart of it all.  Now, his dream is for a school for arts where artists and artisans will present workshop and learning opportunities to interested students.

Named for one of the first families to inhabit Arnaudville and make it a successful community, Frederick l’Ecole des Arts, Inc. was established earlier this month. There are still Frederick descendants living (and speaking French) in Arnaudville and the surrounding area. A non-profit corporation, driven by volunteers, this organization’s purpose is to promote and foster opportunities for artists and artisans to teach sessions and workshops. This will provide opportunities for students to learn and will encourage creative experimentation.  The result will be exposure and supplemental income for the artists/artisans and general economic development, public awareness, participation in and appreciation of the arts not only in Arnaudville but in the whole Acadiana area.  After all, Arnaudville is just minutes from Opelousas, Rayne, Lafayette, and even Baton Rouge.

Over 40 artists/artisans have expressed interest in participating.  These workshops will culminate in exhibitions where the art created in these workshops will be shown during successful annual events such as Fire and Water – Le Feu et l’Eau, the Arnaudville festival held in mid December and the Bayou Blues Revival held in May.  Jill Hackney, Lori Henderson, Kelly Guidry,  Sculptor William Lewis, George Marks, Al Berard, Kevin Murphy and Patrice Melnick are just a few of the artists/musicians/writers who will be scheduled in the coming months.  Jill Hackney will present a workshop on July 10 and 11th.  She will teach “Painting Reflected Light” from 9:00 a.m. to Noon to a group of advanced oil painting students. Visit www.jillhackney.com to learn more about her work.

But, not just painting and fiddle playing will be taught.  In order to support the antiques market, there is a need for moss gatherers, broom makers, fine antique upholsterers and artisans to repair and touch up fine porcelain pieces.  Guest artisans will be brought to Arnaudville to teach these specialized areas.

The Arnaudville townspeople are always eager to share the warmth of their community with other residents of south Louisiana and visitors from around the world.  Frederick l’Ecole des Arts, Inc., is yet another reason to get on the road.  To register or to obtain more information, visit www.frederickart.homestead.com or call 337 523-5832.
